Screen Time

Well, the results are in. Study has shown that 100% of moms (who live in our home) were found to be happier and have living children when the toddler is allowed to have approved educational tv “screen time” while mom does the dishes.

This study was conducted the afternoon of September 19th, and despite what some experts might say, it has been proven that said toddler was happily living and breathing after mother was able to clean without interruption! Once again, this mother knew her own limits, knew the limits of her child, and said “screw it” to “experts” who say that children under 5 don’t need screen time.

Granted, not all children who might be test subjects in subsequent studies in other homes, will finish their screen time talking about flutes and using musical terms like “pianissimo” and “forte,” but 100% of the toddlers in this study did show musical knowlege after the completion of screen time, proving that mom knows best when it comes to activity and show selection: not only was said toddler still living and breathing (because mother was able to clean in peace), but said toddler also gained musical knowledge. Imagine that! Living and learning… While watching tv at age two.

This blog post was written for the hundreds of moms out there who rock at being moms, and strive to teach their kids every day:
You are the moms who never give up teaching your kids new skills. You are the moms who read Hop on Pop and Fox in Socks without batting an eye. Green Eggs and Ham’s got nothing on you. No tongue twister Dr Suess can dish out can keep you from snuggling with your kiddos and reading – multiple times a day. You are the moms who read articles about how much screen time your kids get, and you feel guilty that you let them watch four shows (20mins long each) yesterday. You swear you won’t do it again. Lighten your load, Mama. You are FABULOUS at what you do, and that article about screen time is NOT talking about you or your kids. That article is talking about the parents that don’t even know “screen time” is a buzz term these days… And their children who watch full length rated R movies at age 3 and think nothing of it. Your child watching Cars once a week (or heck, even twice a week) is NOT what they are addressing. Why do we as moms put so much emphasis on what the world says we are doing wrong instead of praising ourselves and others for all the things we are doing right? Yup, Becca watched three shows today. And I did the dishes. Clean sink without interruptions= priceless. Esp since it was only clean for about five minutes… Then it was time for dinner!

And let me add… Lest there be ANY confusion: if you aren’t a parent, you don’t know. Even if you think you do. I used to “know”… Then I had kids. Let the parents do the parenting. And “experts,” remember that you can only truly ever be the expert of your own test subject… You’ve never met mine. GOD MADE EVERY PERSON UNIQUE. No kid fits a mold. Except their own. So don’t let ANYONE except God tell you how to parent your child. He is the only one who knows how that child’s brain is wired. Leave the “experts” in the dust- bc they will only make you feel like dust. Or maybe the dust on the underside of a really old cowboy boot sitting in the back of the closet in an old abandoned farm house.

Take heart! Study results are in… You’re a great mom!

Owl Art

IMG_8875

So, I saw an idea shared by one of my favorite bloggers for these adorable (and perfect) owls.  And I decided to make our own project – to make our family… and let it be more of a “free” design.  I just cut ovals by hand – no pre-design – and let Becca do all the gluing (a BIG step for me since, as you know, I’m somewhat of a neat freak… and so is she!).  I put glue on a paper plate, and she used a throw-away foam brush to spread it.  Worked great!  Then we used fake leaves from a package b/c let’s face it – in South Texas, our leaves don’t turn until November, and I wanted to do this project now!

IMG_8759

To be perfectly honest, these owls sat about 2/3 finished on our counter for almost a week.  B/c that’s just how we roll when Mommy is living every day in constant pain from RA.  Some days I have patience for art projects, and some days I just don’t.  But now they are done, and hanging on our wall, and they are just absolutely adorable!  Becca helped color the background paper and told me what names to write by each owl.  I love her interaction with every step of the process, and they were certainly super fun.

To make your own, you’ll need:
cardstock ovals for the owl bodies
paper to go behind the eyes
google eyes
leaves
paper for the noses and feet
glue
and a large sheet of butcher paper if you are going to hang them on a display picture like we did.

Wow.  My 150th post.  I probably should write something inspired.  About how fabulous motherhood is, about how much I love writing, or maybe about how I’d love to see my Facebook page take off and everyone should go click “like” on it.  So many topics, so little time.  I’ve decided, however, to challenge myself to think of 150 things I’m thankful for.

Wacky Wednesday

From the mouth of Becca…
  • Ran, slipped, fell, bonked her chin on the floor.  No tears, just this: “Woh… That’s why we go slow!”  Glad you get that, little one!
  • “There’s my automan.  There’s my hearth.  There’s my couch!”  Everything is “my…” lately.  Everything.  Especially MY phone!  HA!
  • “Are you comfy?”  “No, I’m cute.  I’m Becca Joy Hinnant.”  Hahahahahhahaha  Seriously.  Exactly how it went down.
  • “I don’t like toast.”  Really.  Seriously.  This from the girl who asks for toast every morning for breakfast now (including the morning she said this.)
  • “There’s a house fly in here.  Oh no!  Where did it go?  Gonna get you.”  Look out – those evil house flies… they’re gonna get you!
  • After MOPS: “Kangaroo goes hop hop hop and God made Kangaroo and her family.  God made my family too.”  I’d say their lesson was a success. 🙂
  • Her MOPPETS teachers said she shared this during their lesson about God making their family members:  “God made baby Grayson in Mommy’s tummy but he came out and I’m sister and he’s brother and I love him SOOOO much!”  Love.  Makes my heart so so happy.
  • Standing in the rain – “It’s so wet and splashy, Mommy!”

A Little Walk

After Becca and Cody stumbling upon a rattlesnake in the front yard (we live on an acre and a half that is mainly wooded), I had been more than a little timid about taking her for a walk on our nature trail… and for good reason.  So, I decided that if I wanted to do a nature collection to use with her light box, the best plan would be to do it when Daddy was home!  So we did!  We went for a fabulous nature collecting walk with our protector right there ready to ward off any sneaky snakes that might have crossed our path.  Thankfully, we didn’t see any, and it helped both of us female chickens to overcome a little of our fear.

We took a baggy with us and collected several awesome items along the way, and then came back inside to look at them on the light box to see if we could see through them or not.  Sadly, our really cool rock is not see-through.  Good lesson to learn!  The leaves, on the other hand, and blade of grass, looked AWESOME!
